Winners shown in bold.

Best Picture:
"Babel"
"The Departed"
"Letters From Iwo Jima"
"Little Miss Sunshine"
"The Queen"
I actually thought the awards were going to be split between Marty and Babel since "The Queen" was more about Helen Mirren than Stephen Frears. I think this is the first time a Martin Scorcese movie wins for Best Picture.

Best Actor:
Leonardo DiCaprio, "Blood Diamond"
Ryan Gosling, "Half Nelson"
Peter O'Toole, "Venus"
Will Smith, "The Pursuit of Happyness"
Forest Whitaker, "The Last King of Scotland"
Anytime a black person wins an accolade, a klansman looses his sheet, but man, this is one time I wish an old white guy got the prize. I'm sorry, but with one foot in the grave, Peter O'Toole should have gotten the honors. It's probably the biggest snub in Oscar history and I am asbolutely upset by it.

Best Actress:
Penelope Cruz, "Volver"
Judi Dench, "Notes on a Scandal"
Helen Mirren, "The Queen"
Meryl Streep, "The Devil Wears Prada"
Kate Winslet, "Little Children"
Thank goodness Meryl Streep lost. I mean, no offense, she was brilliant in the part, but she has more than her share of Oscars. This was Helen's night. Period. End of story.

Best Supporting Actor:
Alan Arkin, "Little Miss Sunshine"
Jackie Earle Haley, "Little Children"'
Djimon Hounsou, "Blood Diamond"
Eddie Murphy, "Dreamgirls"
Mark Wahlberg, "The Departed"
Little Miss Sunshine is what I call, the obligatory indie movie about weirdly dysfunctional white people. You know what I mean, The Royal Tenenbaums, Strictly Ballroom, Spanking the Monkey. I really didn't think I was going to like it but this movie proves the Oscars need a new catetgory : Best Ensemble Cast.

Supporting Actress:
Adriana Barraza, "Babel"
Cate Blanchett, "Notes on a Scandal"
Abigail Breslin, "Little Miss Sunshine"
Jennifer Hudson, "Dreamgirls"
Rinko Kikuchi, "Babel"
There is not much to say about Jennifer Hudson other than one word : Cinderella. Also, it vindicated not only her, but supporters like Elton John who denounced her being voted out of American Idol. Success is the sweetest revenge.

Directing:
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, "Babel"
Martin Scorsese, "The Departed"
Clint Eastwood, "Letters From Iwo Jima"
Stephen Frears, "The Queen"
Paul Greengrass, "United 93"
This is one win that was completely satisfying. At last Marty won --and had his friend on stage to celebrate with him.

Best Foreign Language Film:
"After the Wedding," Denmark
"Days of Glory (Indigenes)," Algeria
"The Lives of Others," Germany
"Pan's Labyrinth," Mexico
"Water," Canada
Germans are hip again.

Best Adapted Screenplay:
Sacha Baron Cohen and Anthony Hines and Peter Baynham and Dan Mazer and Todd Phillips, "Borat Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan"
Alfonso Cuaron and Timothy J. Sexton and David Arata and Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, "Children of Men"
William Monahan, "The Departed"
Todd Field and Tom Perrotta, "Little Children"
Patrick Marber, "Notes on a Scandal."
I really, really, really wanted Sacha to win this one. Heck, I think he should have been nominated for a Best Actor award. Haters.

Best Original Screenplay:
Guillermo Arriaga, "Babel"
Iris Yamashita and Paul Haggis "Letters From Iwo Jima"
Michael Arndt, "Little Miss Sunshine"
Guillermo del Toro, "Pan's Labyrinth"
Peter Morgan, "The Queen"
Another win that was totally satisfying --and deserved.

Best Animated Feature Film:
"Cars"
"Happy Feet"
"Monster House"
I called this one. I've been following animation movies for years and new Pixar was not going to win this year with environmentalist penguins with rhythm and blues issues. Yet, honestly, the depth of narrative of Monster House should have given them the Oscar. It is shockingly a far more sophisticated movie than what it appears to be. Darker and deeper --way deep as animation movies targeted to kids go. If you haven't seen it, I urge you to rent it. It's fantastic.

Art Direction:
"Dreamgirls"
"The Good Shepherd"
"Pan's Labyrinth"
"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest"
"The Prestige"
Funny little detail : Pan is Mexican movie about the old mother country's (Spain) fascist troubles. The colonized has come back to represent the colonizer. I thik that's pretty cool.

Cinematography:
"The Black Dahlia"
"Children of Men,"
"The Illusionist"
"Pan's Labyrinth"
"The Prestige"
Pan took almost all of the technical awards. Pretty cool for a movie financed with Mexican pesos.

Sound Mixing:
"Apocalypto"
"Blood Diamond"
"Dreamgirls"
"Flags of Our Fathers"
"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest"
Not even obscure technical awards where afforded to Apocalypto. Talk about being shunned no thanks to Mel Gibson.

Sound Editing:
"Apocalypto"
"Blood Diamond"
"Flags of Our Fathers"
"Letters From Iwo Jima"
"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest"
I actually thought Blood Diamond was going to win if only because one day, whilst waiting to see Happy Feet, my nerves were rattled by the sounds coming from a screening room that was showing this movie.

Original Score:
"Babel," Gustavo Santaolalla
"The Good German," Thomas Newman
"Notes on a Scandal," Philip Glass
"Pan's Labyrinth," Javier Navarrete
"The Queen," Alexandre Desplat
OMG. I think this is the only award Babel took out of 8 nominations. Harsh.

Original Song:
"I Need to Wake Up" from "An Inconvenient Truth," Melissa Etheridge
"Listen" from "Dreamgirls," Henry Krieger, Scott Cutler and Anne Preven;
"Love You I Do" from "Dreamgirls," Henry Krieger and Siedah Garrett
"Our Town" from "Cars," Randy Newman
"Patience" from "Dreamgirls," Henry Krieger and Willie Reale
An Inconvenient Truth ended up going 2 for 2. Cool.

Costume:
"Curse of the Golden Flower"
"The Devil Wears Prada"
"Dreamgirls"
"Marie Antoinette"
"The Queen"
I love, love, love the fact they had all the costumes of the nominees worn by models. That was really nifty this year.

Documentary Feature:
"Deliver Us From Evil"
"An Inconvenient Truth"
"Iraq in Fragments"
"Jesus Camp"
"My Country, My Country"
If only he would announce his candidacy now.

Documentary (short subject):
"The Blood of Yingzhou District"
"Recycled Life"
"Rehearsing a Dream"
"Two Hands"
I want to see this docu now.

Film Editing:
"Babel"
"Blood Diamond"
"Children of Men"
"The Departed"
"United 93"
Thelma Schoonmaker is probably the only woman to be in a relationship with Martin Scorcese for almost 40 years because ... well ... she edits his movies, not his life. IMBD says Marty introduced her to her husband. This is one working relationship, Schoonmaker & Scorcese, which two people became siblings through their common art.

Makeup:
"Apocalypto"
"Click"
"Pan's Labyrinth"
I so need to see Pan's Labyrinth now!

Animated Short Film:
"The Danish Poet"
"Lifted"
"The Little Matchgirl"
"Maestro"
"No Time for Nuts"
An Oscar for a non-computer animated film? Shocking.

Live Action Short Film:
"Binta and the Great Idea (Binta Y La Gran Idea)"
"Eramos Pocos (One Too Many)"
"Helmer & Son"
"The Saviour"
"West Bank Story"
West Side Story, played out between Palestinian and Israeli falafel stands on the West Bank? I have got to see this film NOW!

Visual Effects:
"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest"
"Poseidon"
"Superman Returns"
The most gruesomely violent first 5 minutes of any movie I have seen in a long time happened in the first 5 minutes of this movie. And the level of creepiness and violene hinged definitely on the visual effects department. I should sue them to get my money back. I had to leave the theater with Thing #1 crying.

JEAN HERSHOLT HUMANITARIAN AWARD (Oscar statuette):
